Vermont is well known for its slate. The slate we use in our products are all quarried and handcrafted in Vermont. Tough as iron, yet easily worked and pleasant to the touch, slate is a metamorphic rock created 400 million years ago when seabed clay, compressed and heated by the immense weight of the earth, turned to stone. Slate is easily split into thin, smooth "leaves". Colors vary, depending on the presence of trace minerals like mica, iron and chlorite. Vermont quarries yield an attractive gray-green slate.
