Shona sculpture has received worldwide recognition in art galleries and museums throughout the world. Among the most appealing of these works of art are the Ukama or "Loving Families" sculptures, which depict mothers and their children, whole families, and couples embraced in love and dancing in joy. Relationships are an important part of Shona culture and these pieces signify the bond between a mother and her children. The bodies and arms are joined to symbolize the strength and longevity of these relationships. Just as a mother will take care of her young, so it is the responsibility of the children to care for their parents and granparents in later years of their lives. These family Ukama pieces are designed by individual artists who carve and polish their sculptures by hand from Rapoka stone to produce family groups of unusual beauty and exuberance. Colors in the stone tend to vary from one piece to the other, adding to the individuality of each piece of art.

To care for your stone sculpture, make sure that is is free of scratches by sanding it with a fine-grain water paper. Then warm it in the oven (or with a hair dryer) to 250 degrees F. Once warmed, polish it with paste wax, such as Johnson's wax. The wax should melt as it is absorbed into the stone. Let the piece cool and the wax dry to a matte finish. Buff with a soft cloth.
