Shona stone sculpture of Zimbabwe is prized in art galleries and museums and galleries worldwide and has been described by Newsweek as "perhaps the most important new art form to emerge from Africa in this century". Shona sculptors quarry and select their own stone and carve it using only hand tools. Their designs, astonishingly modern-looking, are derived by nature and their vast reserves of tribal and spiritual traditions. The artist generally prefer Serpentine stone because its remarkable hardness guarantees it durability. The stone is frequently multi-colored and is found in shades of black, grey, blue, brown, ochre, green, red and even violet. Colors in the stone tend to vary from one piece to the other, adding to the individuality of each piece of art.

To care for your stone sculpture, make sure that is is free of scratches by sanding it with a fine-grain water paper. Then warm it in the oven (or with a hair dryer) to 250 degrees F. Once warmed, polish it with paste wax, such as Johnson's wax. The wax should melt as it is absorbed into the stone. Let the piece cool and the wax dry to a matte finish. Buff with a soft cloth.
