The Shona sculpture of Zimbabwe is arguably the most significant art form to emerge from Southern Africa this century. Sculptors choose and quarry their own stone. They draw their designs from nature and their vast reserves of tribal and spiritual traditions. These artists work in both serpentine and rapoka stone using only hand tools. "Ukama" or "loving family" - sculptures are among the most popular, they depict mothers and their children, whole families, and couples embraced in love or dancing together in joy. These artists, whose biographies are printed on a card and accompany each piece of art, often cite their own families as being the inspiration for these unique sculptures.
The African animals seen in daily life are another rich source of ideas. Each has its own story, rich in the mythology of Zimwabwe, and these artists have a special talent for bringing them to live in stone.
Colors in the stone tend to vary from one piece to the other, adding to the individuality of each piece of art.
